When using this chart to determine size, look for pants which will fit with the larger measurement (between your waist and hips). For instance, if your waist is 95 centimetres and your hips 127 centimetres, you’ll need size 22. Whether or not the pants fit your waist, they’re not going to work if they do not also fit your hips.

Always take your hip measurements at your hip’s widest point. If the tops of your thighs are wider than your hips, then take this measurement here instead to ensure a better fit. Keep in mind that some clothing manufacturers have their own sizing charts, which means you should use their measurements to determine size.

Next, measure your inseam. If your legs are short, remember that it is better to have your pant leg touch the top of your shoe, but not hang over so that you step on them. The back of the hem should touch the middle of the back of your shoes. If your inseam is less than 75 centimetres (29 inches), then you should be looking at petite sizes. If your inseam is longer than this, then look at regulars and if needed, have the length adjusted. If your inseam is more than 82 centimetres (32 inches), look at tall sizes.

A gathered waist emphasizes weight so stick with straight pants to disguise a large hip and waist but use a longer jacket length to hide it. In an effort to hide their extra weight, some women select baggy or loose fitting pants. These actually make the person wearing them look larger. Short-legged women can use tiny vertical stripes to make their legs look longer and give the illusion of height. A wide belled bottom actually is best for the longer legged woman.

You’ll have a far easier time finding the perfect figure-flattering fit for you if you take accurate measurements and use them when shopping for pants. Remember to take your measurements when you are at ease. Don’t suck in your stomach; this will only lead to you purchasing pants which are not a good fit. After all, the reason for accurate measurements is to get a better fit - only you will see your measurements, so relax.
