What the heck is a cummerbund I hear some of you asking. Generally worn with a dinner suit, a cummerbund is a band of material, often silk worn around the waist. It is worn for appearance only and was first used by high ranking British Army Officers serving duty in the colonies.

It’s key objective today may be simply to disguise the expanding waistline. It will always serve to create the illusion that your legs are longer, but has always remained an item of clothing from the bygone era.

Not so today though, for the cummerbund is experiencing a resurgence in its popularity fuelled in no small way by none other than David Beckham the soccer star and would-be fashion icon. He wore a cummerbund to accessorize his suit at his 30th birthday bash.

Modeling shows have also highlighted this item more as men’s suits are shown with fashion designers current clothing lines. Gucci and John Galliano have added cummerbunds to their clothing lines as well as an array of adornments.

Always associated with the most formal of occasions, the cummerbund has now been given a makeover and is appearing everywhere as a casual accessory. Indeed, the aforementioned Becks wore no tie and an unbuttoned shirt. The reviews voted it a big hit and so the look was made.

Not everyone agrees with the look, however, so it is unlikely that it will ever transcend into mainstream fashion.

One of the problems with using the cummerbund to hide various bulges and lumps at the waist is that it becomes a focal point, drawing the eye to the waist and therefore to the lumps and bulges. A contrasting color, such as a black on white, or red on white, especially emphasizes a more rotund waist. Whereas not too long ago cummerbunds were found only at vintage clothing stores, their increased popularity as a fashion item has made them more readily available.
