General Tuxedo Care Guidelines
July 31st, 2009 by Richard M. Gluto
The majority of us only purchase a tuxedo when we find ourselves faced with the inability to attend an event in our favorite t-shirt. When the moment has passed, a man’s most fashionable evening wear is relegated to the dark recesses of his closet. To make the most of your investment, your tuxedo should be continuously maintained to always fit your needs.
The next time the tuxedo makes an appearance it is likely to go through the same process and return to be relegated to the rear of the closet.
Unless your tuxedo makes regular appearances for business purposes (hint hint Mr. Bond), it can be quite some time before the penguin suit makes it back into the public eye. You don’t want to find a year or two down the line that your long neglected tuxedo is moth ridden and half eaten.
The nocturnal winged beast the moth is one of your wardrobe’s biggest enemies. Moths can be very aggressive in their feeding habits and it won’t take long before your tuxedo is toast. Cedar can be an excellent deterrant to these night time cotton lovers. There are many chemical and natural products that are able to keep the moths away, but cedar’s natural properties are a great repellant for bugs and mold or mildew.
Take care after laundering that your tuxedo is precisely hung to avoid any wrinkling over time. Place it on the hanger in the same manner that it would be worn. Make sure to store your tuxedo away from any light source. Constant or even periodic exposure to light can leave your tuxedo faded or discolored.
Always use a good travel bag when flying. These are zipped outer bags with a built in coat-hanger. The superior products permit your suit to be folded kindly for travel without creasing too much. Once at your destination, you should free your suit and permit it to hang naturally for as long as possible.
It’s always a good idea to ask for recommendations when searching for a service to professionally clean your tuxedo. Try to find an establishment that cleans garments ‘in-house’ as opposed to the many dry cleaners who often send their garments away to be laundered.
Your professional dry cleaner should also be able to perform alterations to your tuxedo as your body changes over time. A tuxedo is an investment to looking your best, whether you gain or lose weight, an well-performed alteration should be able to keep you looking and feeling comfortable at your formal event.
